There’s a line between writing about trauma and writing from it. This felt like the latter to me. You write about this stuff only when you’ve walked through it. Respect for that Baird...

I too have encountered this supporting angel in the flesh running the final two miles up Union Avenue of the Saint Jude Marathon. I was 53 and born in Memphis. She was from Saint Louis and half my age as she passed me on a wrenching up slope segment just before the two blocks of Cleveland and Bellevue. This lovely angel encouraged me to push onward and upward. And, I did and finished just behind her. And thereby sharing the beauty and suffering with an angle from the sister city of Memphis. She was from Saint Louis, MO. Her image is always above that Sister City’s Arch by the great Mississippi Rive. The great river flows from the north, always flows between us. The year was 2003 and my mother had passed in July. My two daughters were also participating and running as a tribute to their grandmother who had been born in a small house on Riverside Drive in 1927 which the year of the Great Mississippi Flood.
