Evolutionarily, these tendencies have both developed and served us well no doubt. But arguably we may have outgrown their need. A very interesting issue: how do a group of individuals self-organize to maximize each's goals while minimizing infringements on each's freedoms? I find this series of meditation on freedom you're writing to be very thought provoking! 🙂
Your question is the big one staring our species in the face now Michael. I think we'll either create new structures of fairness/balance or go the way of the dinosaurs (creating our own asteroid!).
Glad you're enjoying the freedom ride. My next and final essay on that topic is about freedom in later adulthood. You're probably too young to read it! 😉 (/s)
And I'm afraid not getting much older! What an interesting question Baird, what if we were born physiologically old but steadily aged physiologically younger? We'd reach a maximum of experience, if not wisdom, as we entered physiological teenagerhood! What would be the ramifications of that?
Believe it or not, I hadn't heard of either the movie or novel! Found both by googling! Another original idea someone got to first! Story of my life. Are there any original ideas out there I sometimes wonder... Anyway, I really agree with you about the wasted aspect. In elections, we wouldn't dream of electing the gerontocrats of tidsyy..they wouldn't even have their drivers licences yet! I think human nature would remain invariant. It's just the timing might change....
Yes, I think this hits the truth. Most people want a roof and food and family and beyond that they are happy for someone else to do the heavy lifting of making decisions.

The Benjamin Button experiment? Sign me up! Youth is wasted on the young.

Deciding is hard. Makes my head hurt sometimes!
