“It is not the strongest of the species that survives.” -- Charles Darwin
Wise Words on HUMAN NATURE
People have been known to purposefully distort the meaning of a book or document in order to support their personal beliefs and aims. The New Testament and the Koran and The U.S. Constitution have all been manipulated to serve corrupt and nefarious purposes.
Charles Darwin’s brilliant paradigm for biological change due to random mutations and natural selection has been perverted by various psychopaths to justify their malice and violence. The notion that the physically strongest species should naturally dominate every niche is wildly out of tune with Darwin’s discoveries. The very term social Darwinism, a horrific thesis justifying genocide and enslavement, is a perversion of his true vision of evolution:
It is not the strongest of the species that survives … It is the (species) that is the most adaptable to change, that lives within the means available and works co-operatively against common threats. — On the origin of species, 1859
As (humanity) advances in civilisation, and small tribes are united into larger communities, the simplest reason would tell each individual that (they) ought to extend (their) social instincts and sympathies to all members of the same nation, though personally unknown to (them). This point being once reached, there is only an artificial barrier to prevent (their) sympathies extending to the (people) of all nations and races. — The descent of (humanity) and selection in relation to sex, 1871
[The words in parentheses above were changed from male (man, he/him, his) to gender-neutral (person, they/them, their) forms so every reader can hear this important quotation as written to/for them]
I think this tendency to cherry-pick and distort isn't just about malice or stupidity. I used to think it was. I believe it speaks to our need to make sense of the world and to find justifications for our beliefs and actions. Sometimes, that drive leads us to these insights. Other times, it leads us terribly astray.
Happy Thursday Baird!
You are a one man rectification of Darwin's words!!
Shocking how they have been twisted and wormed their way into everyday parlance.
